General: Slender, taprooted annual; stems leafy, sometimes branched at the base, finely hairy, to 15 cm tall.

Leaves: Opposite, stalkless, firm, palmately cleft into several narrow, whiskery segments, so that the pair of divided leaves looks like a whorl of 6-14 linear leaves; leaves of inflorescence longer and more whiskery than those below.

Flowers: Pink to purplish or white, with a long (to 3 cm), slender tube abruptly flaring in a yellow throat from which the 5 pinkish, 2-4 mm long flower lobes spread; flowers stalkless in a leafy cluster stop the stem.

Fruits: Capsules, 3-chambered; several seeds per chamber.

Ecology: Scattered in open, dry to vernally moist sites at low elevations.
