False Lily-of-the-Valley

General: Perennial from slender, branched, creeping rhizomes; stems erect, 10-40 cm tall.

Leaves: Alternate, 1-3 (usually 2), broadly heart-shaped, smooth on top, to 10 cm long, with long stalks.

Flowers: Small, white, with flower parts in 4s (unlike usual 3s of most species in the lily family), delicately perfumed; several to many in terminal cylindric cluster.

Fruits: Small, round berries, light green and mottled brown at first, becoming red, to 6 mm diameter.

Ecology: Moist to wet, usually shady woods, riverside areas, at low to middle elevations; sometimes forms the dominant groundcover in Sitka Spruce forests near the sea.
